Solar PV
The basic building blocks of a PV solar system are individual cells containing a semiconductor, such as silicon.
When light strikes the cell, electrons are knocked loose from atoms creating an electric current.
This is called a photovoltaic effect in physics.
Usage
Solar cells are commonly employed in calculators and watches.
Several cells can be connected to form modules or panels
that can then be positioned on, for instance, rooftops of houses and office buildings.
The Direct Current (DC) electricity produced by the panels is fed to an inverter which converts it to 230Vac that can be used within the home.
The output of the inverter is wired back to the consumer board to supplement the electricity you draw from your supplier and so reduce your bill.
Any surplus electricity may be sold back to the grid as part of the 'Feed in Tariff' incentive, that was confirmed for the UK on 1st April 2010, which makes PV an even more attractive investment.
